Tampa Gets Preseason Nod to Win SSC Baseball Title
Tampa has been tabbed the preseason favorite to win the 2011 Sunshine State Conference baseball championship.
The Spartans, winners of four of the past five league titles, accumulated 190 points and 15 first-place votes. Florida Southern collected 163 points and claimed the other three first-place nods to place second in the poll, which was conducted among conference baseball coaches and sports information directors.
Florida Tech took the third slot in the rankings with 146 points. Nova Southeastern was fourth with 112 points. Rollins received 103 points to hold down fifth place in the poll.
Gathering 97 points, Barry was ranked sixth. Lynn’s 80 points ranked seventh. Saint Leo (54) and Eckerd (27) rounded out the poll.
Tampa returns just one starter from last season’s squad that went 21-3 in SSC play to win the league crown. Senior third baseman Patrick Donahue earned All-SSC first team honors after hitting .406 with 33 RBI and 19 doubles. Donahue made his way around the infield, also playing third base and shortstop last spring.
On the mound, senior Sean Bierman will provide some experience in the rotation, having made seven starts with a 4-2 record and a 3.60 ERA in 2010. Senior Evan Stobbs was a force out of the bullpen last year, notching 10 saves with a 0.76 ERA.
