Tampa Stumbles in NCAA DII Baseball Elimination Game
Tampa saw its stay at the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship end early Monday with its second straight loss. The Spartans fell 2-1 to Georgia College to end their title hopes. A recap of both of UT's games in Cary, N.C., appears below.
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP GAME ONE (MAY 22): Central Missouri pitcher Brooks Martin made things difficult for the normally-potent Spartan offense, limiting UT to just four hits and one walk over nine innings. Martin notched 10 strikeouts in his complete-game shutout. Albert Selanders was a perfect 3-for-3 for the Mules and drove in all three runs with a two-run homer and an RBI single.
Correy Figueroa was one of only three Tampa players to collect a hit, going 2-for-4. Patrick Donahue and Jared Simon tallied other UT hits. Sean Bierman took the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and one walk over five innings. He struck out four.
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP GAME TWO (MAY 24): The scenario facing Tampa on Monday at the DII Baseball Championship was simple: win or go home. Unfortunately, the Spartans struggled to put runs on the board for the second straight game, and the squad fell to Georgia College 2-1 to end its run at the national title.
UT managed seven hits off GC&SU pitcher Jason Nicholas but got only one unearned run off those hits. Nicholas also surrendered two walks in eight innings of work, while striking out six. Benton Yaun was the difference for the Bobcats, as he drove in both Georgia College runs.
Mike Schwartz accounted for UT's lone RBI in a 2-for-4 performance. Patrick Donahue was 3-for-4 at the plate. Josh Bowman took the loss, surrendering two earned runs on six hits and four walks. He struck out eight.
