SLU's McDonald and Lynn's Pavanelli Earn Tennis Weekly Awards
Saint Leo's Jeanette McDonald and Lynn's Luca Pavanelli have been named Sunshine State Conference Tennis Players of the Week for the period ending March 7.
WOMEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK -- Saint Leo junior Jeanette McDonald (Spring Hill, Fla.) helped the Lions get on the winning track with three victories last week. McDonald went 2-1 in the top singles position and 3-0 in the #1 doubles slot. Opening the week with a 7-2 non-conference win over Eckerd, she posted a 2-6, 6-3, 10-6 win over Emmy Laing. She also teamed with Shaena Keefe for an 8-6 doubles win over Laing and Stephanie Jenks. In a 6-3 victory against Lake Superior State, McDonald downed Adrienne DiVito 6-2, 6-1 in singles and joined Keefe for a 9-8 doubles win against DiVito and Carolyn Pumford. Rounding out the week with a hard-fought 5-4 decision over Michigan Tech, McDonald and Keefe notched a point with an 8-5 doubles win over Ploy Suthijindawong and Nathalia Rodelli.
MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK -- Lynn sophomore Luca Pavanelli (Milan, Italy) posted a 2-1 singles mark and a perfect 4-0 doubles mark as the No. 4 Fighting Knights went 3-1 against a gauntlet of nationally-ranked opponents last week. Pavanelli played at the #3 singles slot and the #2 doubles position in each of the matches. In a 7-2 victory over No. 12 Northwood (Mich.), he defeated Marcus Oliveira 6-0, 6-1 in singles and joined Alex Voirin for an 8-4 victory over Julian Freese and Michael Haas in doubles. In a 7-2 setback at No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic, the No. 32-ranked Pavanelli fell to No. 5 Rafael Array 4-6, 6-0, 11-9 in singles but chalked a doubles point with Voirin compliments of an 8-5 win over Matus Mydla and Daniel Regan. The duo also accounted for a point in a 5-0 win over No. 11 Georgia College, defeating Giovane Nucci and Max Beliankov 8-6. Concluding a challenging week with a 7-2 win at No. 15 Francis Marion, Pavanelli rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 singles win over Dirk Bair and combined with Voirin for an 8-6 win over the duo of Bair and Karl Rogers.
