2009 All-SSC Men's Golf Team Announced
Ten student-athletes representing five institutions were named to the 2009 All-Sunshine State Conference Men’s Golf Team, announced Friday by Commissioner Michael J. Marcil. Nova Southeastern swept the three special awards, with Greg O’Mahony tabbed Golfer of the Year, Kevin Marsh selected Coach of the Year, and Ben Vertz chosen Freshman of the Year.
Voting for the all-conference team was conducted among the league’s men’s golf coaches and sports information directors.
Earning All-SSC First Team honors with O'Mahony were Steven Brame (Lynn), Jude Eustaquio (Florida Southern), Matt Stauch (Florida Southern), and Carlos Velez (Barry).
Named All-SSC Second Team were Victor Billskoog (Barry), Chris Carlin (Barry), J.D. Guinney (Rollins), Byron White (Nova Southeastern), and Marcus Williams (Lynn).
A senior from Tequesta, Fla., O’Mahony posted a 72.19 stroke average over 26 rounds. He notched four top-five finishes, including an individual victory at the SSC Championship. He was runner-up at the CSUB Invitational and tallied a pair of third-place finishes at the Bobcat Invitational and Southeastern Collegiate. O’Mahony’s strong showing in the spring portion of the schedule earned him three SSC Golfer of the Week awards.
Marsh earns Coach of the Year accolades after leading the Sharks to their third SSC title in five years. Currently ranked No. 3 in the Golf World/Nike DII poll, NSU has finished no lower than seventh in the 10 events in which it has competed. The Sharks saved their best golf for the latter half of the season, chalking five straight top-three finishes. Included in that total were team victories at the SSC Championship, the Southeastern Collegiate, and the CSUB Invitational. Marsh’s Men’s Coach of the Year award is his second such honor, as he also garnered the distinction in 2007. He was also chosen as the 2009 SSC Women’s Coach of the Year.
A native of Coral Springs, Fla., Vertz recorded a 73.48 stroke average in 23 rounds of action. He tied for third at the NSU Shark Invitational and was fourth at the Division II Preview. Additionally, Vertz logged a 10th-place showing at the Barry Invitational.
