Nova Southeastern Claims 2009 SSC Men's Golf Title
Nova Southeastern won the 2009 SSC Men’s Golf Championship on Tuesday at the Lake Region Yacht & Country Club in Winter Haven, Fla. The Sharks claimed their third conference title in five years, while NSU senior Greg O’Mahony won medalist honors.
Leading after two rounds, NSU (290-275-283=848) carded a final-round 283 to beat second-place Barry (286-280-287=853) by five strokes. Florida Southern (297-288-274=859) notched a 274, the lowest round of the tournament, to move up one slot to third. Lynn (295-291-285=871) edged Rollins (293-285-294=872) by one stroke to claim fourth place.
O’Mahony’s first-place finish did not come without some excitement. After three rounds of action, he was tied with Florida Southern’s Brian Richey with a 207. The gentlemen faced off in a playoff hole, which O’Mahony won.
The top five golfers earn recognition on the All-Tournament Team. Joining O’Mahony (70-66-71=207) and Richey (71-71-65=207) were Barry’s Carlos Velez (72-66-72=210), NSU’s Byron White (73-70-68=211), Lynn’s Steven Brame (71-72-68=211), and Rollins’ J.D. Guinney (71-68-72=211).
