Florida Southern Claims 2008 SSC Men's Golf Championship
Heading into the final round in a three-way tie for first, the Florida Southern men’s golf team overcame blustery, cool weather to surge to the title at the 2008 SSC Men’s Golf Championship, which concluded Tuesday at Duran Golf Club in Viera, Fla.
The Moccasins entered Tuesday’s round tied with Lynn and Nova Southeastern atop the leaderboard, as all three squads completed the first two rounds of action with a score of 577. Nevertheless, FSC carded a final-round 302, the lowest score of the day, to secure a seven-stroke victory (281-296-302=879). The championship is the first for the Mocs since they reeled off a string of conference titles from 1997 to 2001.
The individual title proved to be every bit as exciting as the team competition, as three golfers, NSU’s Greg O’Mahony, Lynn’s Jordan Holley, and Southern’s Jude Eustaquio faced off in a two-hole playoff to break a three-way tie (214). Each shot par on the par-five ninth hole, but it was O’Mahony who birdied the par-four 10th hole to win medalist honors.
Lynn finished second in the team standings with a three-round tally of 886 (295-282-309). Last season’s SSC champion, Nova Southeastern (290-287-312=889) settled into a tie for third with defending national champion Barry (289-293-307=889).
Florida Tech’s 895 (295-296-304) placed the Panthers in fifth place, while Saint Leo (298-306-315=919) finished sixth, and Eckerd (300-303-318=921) placed seventh. Tampa (306-316-314=936) and Rollins (306-311-320=937) rounded out the standings.
Joining O’Mahony, Eustaquio, and Holley on the All-Tournament Team was Florida Tech’s David D’Agostino, who placed fourth with a score of 217. Also earning the recognition were Florida Southern’s Brian Richey and Barry’s Victor Billskoog, who tied for fifth with a final tally of 220.
